Mass production and batch production

  • Batch production is when a small number of identical products are made. batch production is limited to several hundreds of products at a time
  • Batch production may also be labor-intensive, but jigs and templates are used to aid production. Batches of the product can be made as often as required. The machines can be easily changed to produce a batch of a different product.
  • Advantage-

    • Different batches of the different product can be made.
    • Cost-effective
    • Allows workers to specialize and use special equipment.

    Disadvantage-

    • It requires space to store the products.
    • Workers doing a specialized job which may lead to the tiredness.

  • Mass production is when hundreds of identical products are made, usually on a production line. Mass production is manufacturing a large number of products at a time. This usually is a large scale operation that involves large machinery and the product passes through several stages during production. Example: Cars,
  • Mass production often involves the assembly of a number of sub-assemblies of individual components. Parts may be bought from other companies. There is usually some automation of tasks (eg by using Computer Numerical Control machines) and this enables a smaller number of workers to output more products.
  • Advantage-

    • Products made quickly
    • Cost-effective
    • More interchangeability achieved.

    Disadvantage-

    • For the different type of product different line is required
    • High production cost.
    • limited component size
